    The “Behind The Brand” Podcast With SEO Guru Ken Reig

    Outdoor industry marketing agency TBA Outdoors continues its influence with the organization’s podcast aimed at helping outdoor brands grow and connect with their customers. Hosted by TBA Outdoors President, Todd Fuller, the Behind The Brand series features monthly guests including outdoors brand business owners discussing a myriad of topics that relate to brand-building in the outdoors world specifically.

    On Episode 16 of Behind The Brand, Fuller connects with Ken Reig, President of Eight Oh Two, TBA Outdoors’ sister SEO and paid search agency. Reig has been involved in the early days of SEO and evolved within the emerging practice before ultimately launching his own company, Eight Oh Two.

    “In 2008, ahead of the financial crisis, I was still working in-house at Orvis,” says Reig. “My wife and I decided to create our own boutique SEO and paid search agency.”

    Reig continued working with Orvis as well as growing his client list. 

    Fuller and Reig dive into how SEO has and continues to change and discuss why it’s important to stay on the forefront of changes as the algorithm is constantly changing.

    “Google has gotten really good at search intent,” Reig says. “The search engine used to show 10 ecommerce suggestions. Now, you are likely to get a few shopping suggestions along with multiple content marketing stories about your suggested search topic.”

    This wasn’t Reig’s original plan. His early ambition was to be a science fiction writer. He even majored in creative writing in college. After college, he moved to Boston and found temp work at MIT. Yes, you read that correctly – the MIT. This allowed him to explore some of the classes offered by the institution, which included HTML and web design. 

    Throughout the episode, Fuller and Reig discuss how SEO and paid media search are integral for brands looking to expand their reach in obtaining customers as well as retaining them. 

    “SEO is storytelling, and you need to be authentic,” adds Reig. “You used to be able to fake it. However, Google figured out how to determine engagement, and that defines intent.”

    Growing up in the suburbs of New York, Reig spent his summers going to camps. He spent his free time hiking in the Green, White and Adirondack Mountains of the northeast.
